Students are recommended to the Groups Scholars Program by a Recommender in their high school or from a community agency. A recommendation is the only way to gain admittance to the program. To be recommended to the program the student must be a resident of the state of Indiana and meet the income and first-generation guidelines. In addition, there are several academic requirements the student must meet to be eligible for the Groups Scholars Program and Indiana University. Applications for each year are due by November 1st of the preceding year.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and Groups provided it for me."
Groups Scholars Program Requirements
Once a student is accepted as a participant in the Groups Scholars Program they will be required to attend two mandatory meetings:
- Area Visit - an informational meeting held in late Februaury or early March in a location near where the student lives
- Campus Visit - held in April on the Bloomington campus
If the student attends both of these meeting they will be invited to participate in the seven-week "Summer Experience Program" (SEP) on the Bloomington campus. The SEP is funded by IUB and must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.0 to be eligible to return to IUB as a student in the fall. As a Groups Student the student will have access to a variety of supporting services, programs, and opportunities.
