Buxtehude and Suitors
A job offer can mean a long and arduous decision for the candidate.
It can also be quick and simple if the perks turn out to be less than
attractive. Such was the case with Dietrich Buxtehude's search for
a successor. On Harmonia this week we'll look at the men who applied
to succeed him and we'll listen to a new release of Machaut and Solage
by the ensemble Gothic Voices.

Getting "Jiggy" with it...
The world of early music has many personalities, to say the least.
Of the names that stand out, John Eliot Gardiner' is one of distinction.

Names of the Rose
The rose has been a symbol for as long as it has been around. There
is most likely no better emblem for love or beauty. This week on Harmonia
we'll look at the rose as a person, place and thing. We'll also listen
to Nigel North's second installment from his complete John Dowland
series.

Handel and the Seven Deadly Sins
This week on Harmonia we'll be searching for trangressions a la The
Inquistion in the vocal music of George Frideric Handel. And while
there won't be any cruel or unusual punishment for our discoveries,
it'll be exciting enough just to find examples of the worst kinds,
The Seven Deadly Sins. We'll also listen to a new release of forgotten
arias by Baldassare Galuppi.

Kolner Akademie
The German city of Cologne has produced many fine early music ensembles,
yet few if any have ever been led by an American. On Harmonia this
week we'll look at a recent series of recordings by the Kölner
Akademie directed by Michael Alexander Willens. The first four volumes
in the Forgotten Treasures series will be accompanied by their new
release of music by Johann Valentin Meder.
