The Villancico
On Harmonia this week we'll begin to explore the Spanish popular song
known as the villancico. What is now known as a Christmas carol was
once a song that expressed a subtle and varied range of emotions for
Spanish and New World composers. We'll also listen to a new release
of Mozart's works for keyboard and violin.

Magnificat anima mea
On Harmonia this week our musical travels take us to England, France,
Germany, Italy, and even Mexico as we explore the many settings of
the Magnificat. From the quiet devotion of William Byrd to the exuberant
polychoral music of Heinrich Schütz, we'll give you a sampling
of one of the most famous texts from the Christian church service.
We'll also hear a new release by the English viol consort Concordia.

CDM Sampler
On Harmonia we'll hear selections from the CDM label, founded in 2002
by Carles Magraner. Created in order to record performances of his
Spanish ensemble Capella de Ministrers, the series has been quite
prolific. Travel with us this week to Valencia, Spain as we listen
to songs, laments, and instrumental works from the middle ages. We'll
also listen to a new release of Handel's opera Fernando by Il Complesso
Barroco.

Music for the Infantas
The two kings who ruled France during the 17th Century had more in
common than might be assumed. This included their respective marriages
to Spanish Infantas. On Harmonia this week we'll look for remnants
of Spanish culture at the courts of Louis XIII and XIV. Courtly song,
opera arias, and the baroque guitar will be featured alongside a new
release by the French vocal ensemble Ludus Modalis.
