Program Listings - July 2005
July 4
05-27 Stylistic Mergers.
What would have happened if Praetorius and Susato had dropped in on Woodstock?
We'll hear groups who blend early music with a rock sensibility. Watch out!
Also, a new release of music by Domenico Belli featuring Le Poeme Harmonique.
July 11
05-28 Parody
So what is Parody? It can be a joke, a tribute, or a stab in the back. The
14th through 18th centuries had their own original versions of Spinal Tap
and Weird Al. Also, a new release by Les Witches!
July 18
05-29 The Pre-Opera
Opera, monody, intermezzi, and early musical theatre all contributed to opera
at the turn of the 17th century. Where would Pavarotti be without them? Also,
a new release of music of Francois Couperin featuring Alfredo Bernardini,
Francois Fernandez, Emmanuel Balssa, and Elisabeth Joye.
July 25
05-30 Lost Songs of a Rhineland Harper
What did the earliest European songs really sound like? You probably heard
Gregorian chant, but what about the more entertaining stuff? World-renowned
scholar-performer Benjamin Bagby gives us a primer in song with selections
from his new release. Also, we'll check out a new release from the ensemble
Continens Paradisi performing music of Binchois and Dufay.
