Program Listings - August 2005
August 1
05-31 The Renaissance Woman
The Renaissance lit up the spirit of the times, and saw the emergence of women
composers, writers, and artists. Harmonia joins in this liberation movement
with music composed by creative women of the Renaissance. Also, a new release
by Les Voix Humaines of music by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre - and yes
- that's a woman!
August 8
05-32 Homegrown
Much early music took place in church or at court. But what about the home,
pub, and street? This week's Harmonia looks at the common person's music,
and how real folk entertained themselves. Also, a new release of Guillaume
Dufay's Missa Se la face ay pale performed by Diabolus in Musica.
August 15
05-33 Unusual Composers
Do names like Tessier, Bartlet, Hume, and DuMont ring any bells? There are
countless early music composers who didn't always make the hit parade. On
Harmonia this week, we'll try to remedy that oversight, and give them some
air time! Also, a new release of Handel Organ Concertos from Monica Huggett
and Matthew Halls.
August 22
05-34 The Tallis Legacy
Who was Thomas Tallis, and how did this Englishman's music inspire other composers?
On Harmonia this week, we'll explore the ways in which Tallis' music transcends
the ages. Also, a new release of Adam de la Halle's Le jeu de Robin et Marion
performed by Ensemble Micrologus.
August 29
05-35 The Dukes of Burgundy
This title may sound like something you'd find on your cable channel [or your
liquor cabinet!], but worry not! On Harmonia this week we'll hear about the
real dukes whose patronage produced a hotbed of musical activity just southeast
of Paris. Also, a new release from Concerto Delle Viole featuring the music
of William Byrd.
