II. Saturday, October 1, 2005:
THE HUNGARIAN FALL PICNIC - from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. at Bryan Park (North
Shelter). Tell your friends! Celebrate the last days of Summer (first
days of Fall?) and make sure to save your appetite for all of the
delicious food we will have (Please, please, please contact us at
hca@indiana.edu if you would be interested in helping us prepare dishes
for the picnic. We need volunteers!)
III. Friday, October the 21st 2005:
THE ANNUAL COMMEMORATION OF THE 1956 HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION - 5:30pm in the
University Club President's Room in the Indiana Memorial Union. You
are invited to join us in observing the 49th anniversary of the 1956
Revolution. The 2005-2006 Gyorgy Ranki Visiting Hungarian Chair,
Professor Laszlo Borhi will give a short talk to be followed by a cultural
program. The ceremony will be followed by plenty of food and refreshments
(Please contact us at hca@indiana.edu if you are interested in
participating in the musical program or would be able to help with
preparing a dish or
two).

Thursday @ 4:30 PM at the Runcible Spoon. All are welcome to come out
and practice their Hungarian and get involved in the events we have planned
for the Fall.

meeting of the coffee hour.

COMMEMORATION OF THE OCTOBER 23RD 1956
REVOLUTION - To be held in IMU 150 @ 5:00 PM on Thursday the 21st of October.
A brief introductory address by Professor Csaba Pléh, the György
Ránki Hungarian Chair to be followed by a cultural program and
a reception. The Commemoration is generously funded with the support of
CEUS, REEI, IAUNRC and the György Ránki Hungarian Chair.
NOTE: Interested volunteers please contact
us at hca@indiana.edu to coordinate dishes for the reception.

that this semester the Hungarian Coffee Hour will be meeting every Wednesday
@ 4:30 PM at the Runcible Spoon. We hope to have Hungarian language students
old and new as well as any new Hungarian arrivals in Bloomington as our
guests and would love to see you there too (please look over the events
of past semesters to get an idea of what to look forward to).

PAST EVENTS:
Spring Semester 2003
Hungarian Tancház (dancehouse)
Sunday, February 16Alumni Hall, 7:00-11:00pm Recreation of an authentic
Hungarian tanchaz, a Hungarian cultural event that features live folk
dancing and folk music and emphasizes the teaching of folkdances to large
groups of people. This is a special opportunity to learn not only about
the products of a culture (the dances and the music styles), but also
something about the processes- the uniquely Hungarian way that folkdances
are taught and maintained within an ethnic Hungarian Community. 7:00-8:30pm
The Ritka Magyar Hungarian Folk Ensemble will teach folk dances from the
different regions of Hungary. The Eltfa string band will accompany the
teaching with live music. 8:30-11:00pm Request dancing and dance party!
Hungarian Coffee
Hour now meets every Thursday at 6pm at the Bake House Coffeehouse,
at the northwest corner of the Courthouse. All are welcome to come and
practice their Hungarian!

Spring/Fall Semesters 2002:
Lecture to
be held by Zsolt Enyedi of Central European University, Budapest
on Monday, December 2, 2002 at 2:30 PM in Sycamore 210 on THE POLITICS
OF RELIGION IN CENTRAL EASTERN EUROPE - Abstract TBA. Zsolt Enyedi,
PhD, has studied sociology, history and political science in Budapest
and Amsterdam. Currently he is Assistant Professor at the Political Science
Department of the Central European University. His research interests
include party politics, pillarization, religion and politics and authoritarianism.
His publications include Politics in the Shadow of the Cross (1998, Osiris),
Parties and Party Systems (2001, Osiris, co-authored with A. Korosenyi),
Authoritarianism and Prejudice (1999, Osiris, co-edited with F. Eros)
and The 1994 Elections to the Hungarian Assembly (1999,Sigma, co-edited
with G. Toka).

Department of History, Georgetown University gave a lecture entitled
"Limits of Imperial Authority: Ottomans, Habsburgs and Local Power-holders
in Hungary, c. 1550-1700" in Ballantine Hall 140, October 21, 5:30

Hungarian Coffee
Hour takes place every week at Moonstruck Coffeehouse, 118 East Kirkwood
Avenue. We meet every Thursday at 6pm.
2002 Hungarian
Film Festival: The first-ever Hungarian Film Festival at IU will take
place February 8 and 9, 14 and 15. HCA will be screening the following
films: Apa, A Tanu, Szerelem, and Mephisto.
Each film will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by a short
reception.
The 2001-2002 György
Ránki Hungarian Chair will give a lecture, "Hungarian
Catholicism After 1945," February 22 in Ballantine Hall 004.
In a presentation titled
"Wanting the Furniture to Dance: On a newly translated classic interwar
Hungarian novel," IU alumnus and former HCA president Paul Olchváry
of the Princeton University Press will reflect on and read from AZAREL,
a semi-autobiographical novel by the Hungarian writer Károly Pap
(1897-1945), recently published in English. Olchváry's talk is

The Hungarian Independence
Day Reception will be held this year in the Indiana Memorial Union
University Club, Room 150 on Wednesday March 20th at 5:30pm. All are welcome.
Entertainment, food and drink will be provided.
The 9th Annual Central
Eurasian Studies Conference at Indiana University will be held on
Saturday, April 13, 2002. The Central Eurasian Students Association which
hosts the event has issued a Call for Papers with a January 7th deadline.
Hungarian papers/panels are encouraged. Write to aces@indiana.edu.
The annual György
Ránki IU Hungarian Chair Symposium will be Sunday, April 14,
2002 in Bloomington. The topic is Lajos Kossuth and America. The free
symposium is organized by IU Hungarian Chair Visiting Professor Pál
Hatos and the Department of Central Eurasian Studies. Ambassador to the
US Geza Jeszenszky will participate. Advance notice of intent to attend
the
Hungarian symposium is requested but not required. Write to ceus@indiana.edu.
Look out for an announcement
for the HCA Spring Picnic. It will likely be located at Bryan Park
in late April. Food and drinks will be provided.
