The Indiana University Health Center is accredited by Accreditation Association Ambulatory Health Care and provides comprehensive medical services through a staff of Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistant and Registered Nurses. The medical services include care for illness, injury and health maintenance. They are:

What does it cost to go to the Health Center?
Students taking more than 3 on campus credit hours during the Fall and Spring semesters or six on campus credit hours during the summer pay a university health fee resulting in reduced charges at the Indiana University Health Center. The health fee is $99.77 per Fall or Spring term and is assessed on the Bursar’s bill. Office visits with a primary care physician or nurse practitioner are $20.00. The first 2 visits (excluding psychiatry) each semester to Counseling and Psychological Services are free. Continuing visits are $20.00 at Counseling and Psychological Services. There are charges for lab, x-ray, physical therapy, medications, special procedures, allergy injections, immunizations and some other services. We strive to contain costs, with charges significantly lower than the general community.
For students who have paid the Health fee, nutrition counseling, fitness assessment, smoking cessation and pre-scheduled women’s health care appointments with a nurse practitioner are free.
How do I pay for the Health Center charges?
At the end of each visit you will be presented with a bill. A currently enrolled student may:
- Pay for the visit (cash, check, MasterCard, Visa and Discover)
- Transfer charges to your Bursar bill.
Health Center charges transferred to the Bursar will appear on the next Bursar bill under the line item "Health Center Charges."
What insurance do you accept?
The Health Center provides services to Indiana University students from all over the world. Because of the large number of insurance companies involved with such a diverse group of students, the Health Center does not submit charges directly to insurance companies.
Instead, at the end of each visit a bill is generated and given to each student reflecting his or her specific charges. This bill has the special codes and descriptions accepted by most insurance companies.
THE STUDENT SHOULD SUBMIT THIS FORM TO HIS OR HER INSURANCE COMPANY OR SEND IT HOME FOR PARENTS TO SUBMIT.
I am insured through an HMO/PPO Network. How does that affect the use of the Health Center?
The best way to answer the question is to contact your insurer directly. The Member Services Department is usually listed on your insurance card.
Explain your situation to your member service’s representative and ask how to proceed. Every insurance company has a policy for guiding parents of college students. IT IS BEST TO MAKE THIS PHONE CALL TO THE INSURER BEFORE YOU ARRIVE ON CAMPUS. By calling ahead, you will know what to expect, what will be covered, and how to proceed if you need health care while in Bloomington.
Do you have a pharmacy? Do you take pharmacy cards? How are medications paid for?
The Indiana University Health Center has a pharmacy on site staffed by licensed registered pharmacists. The pharmacy fills prescriptions written by Health Center providers and any other licensed medical provider. Many students who routinely take ongoing medication (e.g. asthma) have their prescriptions filled at the Health Center. It is a good idea to review your insurance plan regarding prescriptions so that you are aware of how medications will be reimbursed. (Some plans require prescriptions to be filled only at certain pharmacies).
Pharmacy Cards – The Health Center has contracts with many prescription card companies. You will want to check to see if your card is on the list. Your insurance company can guide you about how to proceed regarding prescription coverage. How much is the Health fee? What do I get for the Health fee? Do I have to pay a Health fee if I already have insurance coverage? Where can I obtain voluntary health insurance?
All students taking more than 3 on campus credit hours during hte Fall and Spring semesters and six or more on-campus credit hours during the summer are assessed a health fee. The health fee for Fall and Spring of 2007/2008 is $99.77 per semester. The Health fee reduces the student’s cost of services, provides up to 2 free visits to the Counseling and Psychological Services (excluding psychiatry) per semester, provides free Health and Wellness services such as nutrition counseling, fitness assessment, and smoking cessation and waives the visit charge for pre-scheduled appointments with the GYN Nurse Practitioners.
The health fee is DIFFERENT from insurance. We strongly encourage all students to have some insurance coverage. Insurance provides coverage regardless of where the injury/illness takes place. The Health fee is a fee that partially covers services at the Indiana University Health Center only. The Health fee is not intended to take the place of insurance.

Does Indiana University require a Hepatitis B vaccine?
No, Hepatitis B vaccine is not required for Indiana University students. However, the Center for Disease Control recommends Hepatitis B vaccine for everyone 18 years old and younger and for anyone over 18 at risk of the disease due to behavior or activities. For students 19 and under, each of the three injections cost $20.00 (pediatric dosage). For students 20 and over, each of the injections cost $34.50 (Prices subject to change.)
Does Indiana University require Meningitis vaccine?
As of February 2005, the Centers for Disease Control recommends that all college freshman, especially those freshmen living in dormitories receive meningococcal vaccine. Indiana University supports this recommendation but does not require meningococcal vaccine for registration. The cost is $95.00. (Price subject to change.)
Does the Health Center provide allergy injections? How do I deliver the serum?
Yes, IUHC provides this if the student mails or brings the serum and physician instructions with them when they come to campus in August. The student should bring the serum and instructions to the Screening Nurse, room 216. The nurse will direct the student to the correct area within the Health Center. The serum will be stored at the Health Center and the student can make appointments to be seen on a regular basis for his/her allergy shots.

I have an ongoing medical problem. How do I ensure continued care at the Indiana University Health Center?
You may want to make an introductory visit to one of the doctors. You can call for an appointment (812) 855-7688. Summaries or copies of medical records should be sent to the Health Center and will become part of your confidential medical record.
This introductory visit could be accomplished before there is an acute need for a visit in order to establish a relationship and comfort level with a Health Center physician.
I have an eating disorder, depression, anxiety (or other mental health issues). Can I be seen at the Health Center?
Yes, the Indiana University Health Center has psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists to provide continuing care to students with a wide range of emotional concerns.
