The IU Health Center logo is a derivative of the official IU seal. It depicts the staff of Aesculapius who, in Greek mythology, was the son of Apollo (often referred to as the god of medicine or healing) and was a famous physician. The staff with a single snake winding up it, the aesculapius, is the recognized official symbol for medical institutions and organizations such as the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization and most other official institutions.

However, one will occasionally see the caduceus, a winged staff, used as the symbol for medical or health related services. This symbol was mistakenly adopted by the US military in 1902. The caduceus is the magic wand of the Greek god Hermes (Roman Mercury), messenger of the gods, inventor of (magical) incantations, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves.

The Latin words Salus, Erudio, Pietas are translated as Healing, Education, Compassion, what the IU Health Center strives to provide to students and staff at all times.
