My experience with undergraduates at North Carolina State University mirrors the findings of the Australian study on historical thinking. If students are not invited (compelled?) to function as apprentice historians, they cannot possibly gain sophistication in historical thinking. We must move them out of their comfort zone as passive consumers of history produced by others to the role of producers of history. We do this by forcing serious engagement with primary sources and the act of critical evaluation and analysis of evidence. For an elaboration, see “Our approach” on my home page
