History Club Civil War Project
The IU History Club recently completed a service project with the Bloomington Boy’s and Girl’s Club to teach and get kids involved in the history of the Civil War. The children involved were eight years old and younger and were introduced to the topic through interactive activities, games, and a question/answer period. The goal was to teach the kids about the war, the Underground Railroad and the different roles of the American president. Matt Hanauer, who was in charge of the organization of the project said that it “went well, and we hope to continue to improve our events in the future.”
The IU History Club was recently resumed after a hiatus by several history students in the department. The service project was part of the larger goal of the club to create a history community among professors, graduate students and undergrads, as well as to strengthen ties between the university and surrounding community through history. Thus this is only the first of such service projects to involve the Bloomington community more broadly, but more are sure to follow.
