Question: What forms are required to apply for a Graduate Assistantship?

Answer: Complete the departmental questions section of the online application at http://www.gradapp.indiana.edu. Also, domestic applicants must complete the FAFSA form at http://www.FAFSA.ed.gov/.

Question: What are the application deadlines for applying to HPER Graduate programs (US citizens)?

Answer: For admission to the following two master’s degree programs, all required application materials must be received by the dates specified below.

  • Athletic training master’s degree program-Review of applications for fall-term admission begins February 1.  (Highly selective; fewer than 20 applicants admitted annually.)  An additional application is required, which is included in the “Departmental Questions” section of the online application.
  • Master of Public Health degree program-Admission for fall term only, with an application deadline of February1.

A rolling admission structure is in place for all other School of HPER master’s degree programs, and for the Director of Recreation degree program.  Applications will be accepted year-round, and upon receipt of all required application materials, decisions may be made until approximately one month before the beginning of the desired term.  However, the application deadline for applicants applying for an assistantship award is March 1 (see question below regarding students seeking assistantships, etc.).

In general, doctoral admission decisions are not made in May, June, July, or August.  Master’s, directorate, and doctoral applicants seeking consideration for assistantships, fellowships, or scholarships should be certain that complete credentials have been received by mid-April.

Question: What is the application deadline for students seeking assistantships, fellowships or scholarships?

Answer: Students seeking assistantships, fellowships or scholarships, should submit all academic program application materials and the application for assistantship, fellowship, or scholarship by March 1.  Consideration for students submitting all materials by this date will take priority over those submitting their materials after the deadline.

Question: How many letters of recommendation are required?

Answer:  The School of HPER requires three letters of recommendation for all majors.

Question: Am I required to take the GRE?

Answer: To find out if the GRE is required for the major to which you are applying go to step #5 of "steps for admission" at: http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/hper/2006-2008/graduate.shtml#adm

Question: Will the School of HPER accept the GMAT in place of the GRE?

Answer: No, only GRE scores are accepted.

Question: What is the minimum TOEFL score required by the School of HPER for international applicants?

Answer: A minimum score of 213 for the computer-based, 550 for the paper-based and 79-80 for the internet-based exam is required.

Question: What happens once the School of HPER receives my domestic (U.S. citizens) graduate application for admission and how long should the process take?

Answer: January through March is the busiest time period for the graduate application process. Once an application has been processed, an e-mail message will be sent to you from the HPER Records Office informing you of any missing application materials. You should expect this process to take at least one month. Once the application is complete the appropriate department is notified and the review process begins. The time it takes for the department to make an admission decision once all application materials have been received varies; usually a minimum of one to two weeks depending on each individual department's review process.

Question: What is the graduate application deadline for international applicants and how long does the application process take?

Answer: It usually takes 5-12 months from the time an international student requests an IU application to the time a prospective student receives permission from the United States Consul to legally enter the U.S. as a student. The slow pace of international mail and the U.S. government regulations significantly complicate the process. This slow pace is currently being mitigated, to a degree, by the fact that Indiana University now accepts (and very soon will require) graduate applications on-line. However, it remains critical that students apply as early as possible, preferably a year in advance of the session they plan to attend. The typical steps in the admission process are:

  • 1-3 weeks - Student sends request for application materials.
(Note: Student can begin an on-line application immediately with no delay)
  • 1-3 weeks - Application materials are mailed to and received by the student.
  • 1-12 weeks - Student completes paper or on-line application, orders transcripts, gathers financial disclosure information, obtains letters of recommendation, writes statement of purpose, and orders GRE and TOEFL scores.
  • 1-3 weeks - Student sends application (by mail or electronically) and supporting documents to International Admissions. Application deadline for international students applying to the Ph.D. program is December 1. The application deadline for all other graduate programs is January 1 for summer or fall entry and September 1 for spring entry (M.S. in Athletic Training & Master of Public Health - fall entry only).
  • 1-3 weeks (minimum) - Masters, MPH, or Directorate applicants - Once all application materials are received the appropriate department is notified to review the file for admission. The time it takes for an admission decision varies; usually a minimum of one to two weeks depending on each individual department's review process.
  • 2-4 weeks (minimum) - Ph.D. applicants - Ph.D. applications are normally reviewed by the School of HPER Graduate Studies Committee. Committee meetings are held once a month during the academic year only.
  • 1-2 weeks - HPER sends a letter regarding the admission decision directly to the student.
  • 1-3 weeks - International Admissions reviews financial documents in accordance with federal guidelines. If the student is admitted and has sufficient funds to attend Indiana University for 12 months, the Office of International Admissions prepares a letter of admission verification and an IU visa certificate.
  • 1-3 weeks - Student receives letter and IU Visa certificate; uses IU visa certificate to apply to the U.S. consul, in their country of residence, for permission to legally enter the U.S. as a new graduate student.
  • 1 week-3 months - U.S. consul grants permission for student to enter the U.S.
  • 2 weeks-2 months - Student arranges to travel to IU to arrive by mid-August, for international student orientation. A School of HPER orientation takes place in late-August. Fall classes begin at the end of August or the beginning of September.

Please note that students should be discouraged from entering the U.S. on a B-2 (tourist) or WT visa. U.S. immigration regulations do not allow a student to change to student visa status after arrival.

Also, these time estimates assume that complete academic and financial information is on file at the time of review. Students need to make every effort to provide IU with all required application materials as quickly as possible.
