Domenico Bertoloni Meli [Department Chair]

After studying physics and German, Domenico Bertoloni Meli received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in History of Science in 1988. He serves as Director of the IU Center for the History of Medicine.

He has received many fellowships and grants, most recently a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Before that he has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princetion, worked at the Max Planck Institute for History of Science in Berlin, and received fellowships from IU, the Dibner Institute, and the Wellcome Trust for the History of Medicine.

Professor Bertoloni Meli has widespread research interests, including Leibniz and Newton, 16th to 18th century mathematics and mechanics, and medicine in the Scientific Revolution. Currently he is writing Mechanism Experiment Disease: Marcello Malpighi and the New 17th-Century Anatomy (under contract with the Johns Hopkins University Press, manuscript to be completed by August 2008).

He has published numerous articles, as well as the following books:
