Beverly H. is 64 years old and resides in a trailer on the
south side of Bloomington, Indiana. She is the mother of six children and
has been married twice. She is a huge fan of NASCAR racing.
"Once you get
hooked on NASCAR,
you're sunk. I guess I'm obsessed with
my NASCAR. My daughter Sandy married a NASCAR crazy
person. He got me started. So that did it. Then Dale Earnhardt got
killed and from then on I was totally into it. I cried for two days when
he got killed. So did Sandy. She'd come over and we'd just boo hoo. I
never seen anything affect so many people in my life, not even Elvis. I'm
serious. I guess Earnhardt was the Elvis of racing."
"If I could go to one race, I'd
definitely go to Daytona 500, just
because it's the heart of the whole racing thing, where it got started.
And I'm just like Dale Earnhardt Jr., I think. Him and Michael Waltrip
and Steve Parks said that everybody thought they wouldn't want to go there
because that's where Dale got killed. But Jr. says that he's drawn there
because he feels closer to his dad. So it doesn't make him feel bad or
grieve when he goes there. He feels comforted. I just wanna go there
myself, because that's where Dale died. That's not being morbid. I'd
just like to go there and see his gold statue. I just think it'd be
neat."
"My dream would be if I won the lottery, to get me a $50,000 motor
home, get on the road, and I'd be a NASCAR yuppie. I'd go to every race.
But my daughter Vonda says I'm crazy cuz an old person ain't supposed to
be that way."
"I've got the Speedchannel now, and I watch three or four old races a
week, and I watch Totally NASCAR every evening, and NASCAR Victory Lane.
Sometimes I watch Windtunnel with David Spane, and Inside Winston Cup. As
a matter of fact, tonight it's on. I can't miss it. And then Trackside's
on Friday night. And they're gonna have Jr. on this week on David Spane.
One day my neighbor Curly said he wondered who was getting killed over
here when we were watching a race. We really get to yelling. Me and
Sandy together, we'd like to knock each other down sometimes. I go crazy
when two of them get real close. Last week Tony Stewart was trying to
catch Jeff Gordon, and I don't like Jeff Gordon. Plus he'd already won
twice in a row. Tony was trying to catch him, and boy if my pushing him
could have got him there, he'd have won. I was screaming my head
off."
"When I went to the Brickyard, everything was so exciting. I'd never
been there before, and just seeing it, my gosh, it's awesome. And I
cannot ever, ever comprehend 300,000 people in one big circle. It was
awesome seeing that many people. But you feel like you're a squooshed
tuna coming out of there. And your head rattles when them cars go by. It
really is cool when all 43 cars go by the first time around. You can't
breathe. Then after they string out a little while it's a little better.
But it was, oh, exciting. And what's good about the track up there, it's
different than any other track. If you're in the infield, you're right
there behind their pits and most tracks you can't even get into the
infield unless you have passes and stuff. They have the stands around
this one, and you're probably 20 feet from the pit crews. Through the
fence of course, but you can still
stick your hand through there, or your hat, or whatever you wanna get
signed, cuz I did it. I got my hat signed by one of Bobby LaBonte's crew
members. About as close as I could
get to him. He's my favorite. When I started watching NASCAR, I just
picked him out. I like him and Tony Stewart. And I really like Joe
Gibbs. He's Bobby's car owner. He's a real good Christian guy. And I
loved Tony Stewart cuz he was an awnry little customer. And he's cute.
If I was younger, he'd have to run for the hills."
