Student Opportunities

peer instructorsThe Human Biology Program encourages students to seek opportunities such as

  • mentoring other students as a peer instructor,
  • student government,
  • internships,
  • volunteer work,
  • research laboratory experiences,
  • and engaging with civic and community service.

Students have the opportunity to serve as peer instructors within the Core Curriculum by enrolling in the elective course, HUBI B460. Peer instruction is structured so that junior and senior students are facilitating the learning of freshman and sophomores. Peer instructors serve as mentors and are also mentored themselves by faculty and graduate associate instructors. Peer instructors Ele Cha, Bryan King and Jessica Mackey were senior Biology majors and former students in Dr. Schlegel’s team-based and case-based Human Physiology (P431) course who served as peer instructors for the first year course offered Spring 2006 as a College Topics Course. It is clear that these peer instructors were an essential component of the learning environment and in fostering the type of learning outcomes desired for Human Biology undergraduate students.

Students will be encouraged to seek opportunities to work in and contribute to research being conducted by faculty on the IUB Campus, especially faculty research laboratories in Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Medical Sciences and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. The Human Biology curriculum supports students in seeking basic science research experiences and hopes to make undergraduate research a more integral component of the curriculum.

Please check back to our website for more information about research, community service and internship opportunities available for undergraduates on the IUB campus.
