Degree Requirements for the Major

The Human Biology program is designed around a core sequence of four interdisciplinary three-credit courses, occurring from the freshman through senior years; each paired with a one-credit seminar course. Students also complete foundational disciplinary courses as well as a selection of courses from one of the following areas of concentration: Human Health and Disease; Human Reproduction and Sexuality; Human Environment and Ecology; and Human Origins and Survival.

Students may pursue either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science.

Bachelor of Arts
B.A. with a concentration in Human Health and Disease
B.A. with a concentration in Human Reproduction and Sexuality
B.A. with a concentration in Human Environment and Ecology
B.A. with a concentration in Human Origins and Survival

Bachelor of Arts - General Requirements for all Human Biology B.A. majors:

Fundamental Skills Requirements:

  • English Composition: 1 course
  • Intensive Writing: 1 course
  • Foreign Language: 4 semester sequence
  • Mathematics: 1 course

Distribution Requirement :

  • Arts and Humanities: 4 courses
  • Social and Historical Studies: 4 courses
  • Natural Sciences and Mathematics: fulfilled by major
  • Topics: 1 course
  • Culture Studies: 2 courses from List A or one course from List A and one from List B

Human Biology Core Sequence: 8 courses (16 hours)

  • Human Biology Core Lectures: 4 courses (12 hours)
  • Human Biology Core Seminars: 4 seminars (4 hours)

Foundation Courses: 4 courses

  • One approved foundation course (minimum 3 credit hours) in each of four different areas of concentration (see List)

Areas of Concentration: 4 courses (12 hours minimum; 6 of these hours must be at the 300/400 level)

  • Courses should be chosen from one of the Areas of Concentration: Human Health and Disease, Human Reproduction and Sexuality, Human Environment and Ecology, and Human Origins and Survival.
  • One course in the chosen Area of Concentration must be from the physical/biological science perspective list and one course must be from the social science and humanities perspective list.
  • Laboratory (or lecture/lab course) requirements: 1 course @ 300-400 level.
  • Courses chosen as Area of Concentration Courses may not be used to satisfy a requirement within the Foundation portion of the major.
  • Students choosing courses outside the College of Arts and Sciences should review guidelines on the amount of such coursework that may be counted toward the minimum total hour requirement for College of Arts and Sciences degrees.

  • Courses should be chosen from one of the Areas of Concentration: Human Health and Disease, Human Reproduction and Sexuality, Human Environment and Ecology, and Human Origins and Survival.
  • At least 18 credits to be chosen from the physical/biological science perspective list including coursework within this category from at least two different departments. This also includes laboratory (or lecture/lab course) requirements: 1 course @ 100-200 level, 3 courses @ 300-400 level.
  • At least nine credits to be chosen from courses from the social science and humanities perspective list including coursework within this category from at least two different departments.
  • Courses chosen as Area of Concentration Courses may not be used to satisfy a requirement within the Foundation portion of the major.
  • Students choosing courses outside the College of Arts and Sciences should review guidelines on the amount of such coursework that may be counted toward the minimum total hour requirement for College of Arts and Sciences degrees.

Courses in Quantitative Analysis and Ethics: 2 courses

  • Quantitative Analysis Courses: 1 course (MATH/PSY K300, CJUS K300, SOC S371, or ECON E370)
  • Ethics Courses: 1 course (PHIL P140, PHIL P242, REL R373, or ENG L240)

Total Hours in the major: 61 minimum
Electives: hours needed to reach minimum: 122 hours
