Dorothy Cheney and Robert Seyfarth are Professors of Biology and Psychology respectively at the University of Pennsylvania. For the
past three decades, Cheney and Seyfarth have studied the communication, cognition, emotions, and social behavior of vervet monkeys and baboons in
Africa. They pioneered the use of microphones and loudspeakers in the field to record and then play back the communicative signals in monkeys. They are
authors of the acclaimed book How Monkeys See the World: Inside the Mind of Another Species (1990). During their visit to Bloomington,
November 3-6, 2009, they will participate in a Seminar on Empathy workshop discussion on Wednesday, November 4, which will be based on selected
readings. Their Branigin Lecture, "The Evolution of Social Cognition," will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Myers Hall 130.
The Branigin Lecture is free and open to the public.
