A. Visiting Fellowships:

The purpose of the Visiting Fellows program is to foster collaborative research and creative projects between IU faculty and scholars, scientists, and artists from outside the university. Nominations for Visiting Fellows may come from an individual faculty member or from a group of faculty members working jointly on a research or creative project. Nominations of several visiting fellows from IU seminars and working groups focusing on special themes are particularly welcome. Fellowships from the IAS may be combined with other forms of support. Fellows will be expected to spend time collaborating with IU faculty, interacting with various campus groups, and offer at least one public presentation to a campus audience. The length of a visiting fellowship can be one to two weeks; the stipend is $2,500 per week (no other expenses are covered). There are currently no deadlines for submitting an application but funds are limited in any given year. Final selections of fellows are made by the Governing Board of the IAS. Logistical arrangements of fellows are made by IAS staff. Formal invitations are issued by the IAS director.

The nomination dossier for visiting Fellows should include the following:

  1. A formal letter of nomination by the principal sponsor/s describing the collaborative project/consultative role in detail, confirming that sponsors and other faculty supporters agree to be present during the entire working visit of the fellow.
  2. Two or more supporting letters from IU faculty supporting the nomination and describing the benefits to be derived from the visit.
  3. Curriculum vitae for the proposed fellow with a list of publications/performances/exhibitions relevant to the proposed visit marked with asterisks.
  4. Curriculum/la vitae of the principal sponsor/s (no more than three pages).

B. Residential Fellowships:

IU faculty members from any Indiana University campus who are on sabbatical or research leave (major grant etc.) and who plan to pursue a significant research project may apply to the IAS for an appointment as a Residential Fellow for a semester or a full academic year. Two to three Residential Fellows will be appointed for 2010/11. Appointments carry a stipend of $1,000 per semester. Residential Fellows will be furnished with an office at the IAS, will be expected to offer one public presentation during their tenure, participate in Institute activities, and interact with other fellows.

Applicants for Residential Fellowships should send a letter of application to the Director, IAS, indicating the nature of their research and an indication of their research support and attach a current c.v. They should also arrange to have one letter of support sent from a scholar or artist attesting to the value of their research effort. THE DEADLINE FOR RESIDENTIAL FELLOW APPLICATIONS FOR 2010-11 IS MAY 1, 2010. Final selections are made by the Governing Board of the IAS.

C. Branigin Lectureships:

Supported by an endowment from the estate of IUB alumna Gene Lois Porteus Branigin, the Branigin Lecture Series brings to the Bloomington campus distinguished interdisciplinary scholars, artists, and public figures from all fields whose work contributes to the scholarly and creative vitality of the university community. During their visits, Branigin Lecturers deliver a major public lecture and meet with a variety of faculty and student groups. Visits last normally from two to three full days. The stipend is negotiable and includes travel and lodging expenses. Nominations can be made at any time but funds allow for only two to three lecturers in most years. Nominations should consist of a letter outlining the potential intellectual and cultural contributions of their visits as well as their scholarly or artistic accomplishments and two letters of support. Nominees’ CV’s or other biographical records should be included. Final selections are made by the IAS Director.
