Institute for Advanced Study/Poynter Center Symposium
Empathy: Self, Society, Culture
November 11-12, 2011 at Indiana University Bloomington
This three-day symposium was part of a larger project designed to examine how the humanities and sciences might cooperate to develop understandings of virtue in modern society. It brought together scholars from a variety of disciplines to explore the theories and practices of empathy in both formal and informal sessions. The three featured speakers, Carolyn Dean, Nancy Eisenberg, and Nancy Sherman, each presented a paper on one of the conference's main themes: Carolyn Dean was the featured plenary speaker for Empathy in Culture, History, and Society and presented a paper entitled "The Longing for Human Dignity and its Relation to 'Virtuous' Empathy"; Nancy Eisenberg presented "Empathy-Related Responding in Children: Relations with Positive Moral and Social Development" as part of the section on Empathy and Psychology; and Nancy Sherman was the speaker for the Empathy and Ethics section of the symposium and presented a paper entitled "Recovering Lost Goodness: Self-Empathy and Self-Forgiveness."
