Fritz Breithaupt Appointed Remak Distinguished Scholar by
Institute for Advanced Study
Indiana University’s Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Fritz Breithaupt, Professor of Germanic Studies,
as Henry H.H. Remak Distinguished Scholar for 2009-10. The award was created in 1994 to honor Professor
Remak (left image) who served Indiana University with distinction for over sixty-five years as a scholar, teacher and administrator.
He also directed the Institute for Advanced Study from 1988 to 1994 and from 1997 to 1998. The award recognizes the
enthusiasm Professor Remak had for scholarship in all fields and the mission of the Institute to promote innovative
ways of thinking.
Fritz Breithaupt (right image) is an expert in German and West European literature, philosophy, and culture since the eighteenth
century. He earned his Ph. D. in German literature from Johns Hopkins University and is the author Der-Ich-Effekt des
Geldes (The Ego-Effect of Money) (2008) and co-editor with Claudia Breger of Empathy and Narration (2008). His book
Kulturen der Empathie (Cultures of Empathy) was issued in 2009.
On October 2, 2009 Professor Breithaupt will lecture on “Cultures of Empathy” at 3 p.m.
in the Dogwood Room, Indiana Memorial Union. His presentation is part of the 2009-2010 Seminar on Empathy sponsored by
the Institute for Advanced Study and the Poynter Center.
