Portable Title VIII Fellowships for Study Abroad

Portable Title VIII Fellowships for Study Abroad (deadline extended to March 20):

Graduate students, area studies specialists, and scholars are eligible to apply for funding to study Azerbaijani, BCS, Czech, Estonian, Georgian, Hungarian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mongolian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Tajik, Tatar, Turkmen, Ukrainian, Uyghur, and Uzbek at levels higher than those offered in the Summer Language Workshop’s 2017 domestic program.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

To apply, applicants must submit:

1.    Statement of purpose, which outlines the applicant’s scholarly or professional need for advanced language study abroad in summer 2017. Statements should also indicate how your overall academic program and/or career might best support the Title VIII mission to "maintain U.S. expertise (including language proficiency and cultural competence) in Eastern Europe and Eurasia/the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union and bring policy-relevant research to the service of the U.S. Government";

2.    A description of the overseas program for which funding is requested. Applicants are strongly encouraged to include contact information and URLs for the overseas program;

3.    A budget for expenses up to $6000. All travel should be planned on U.S. carriers per the Fly America act (http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/103191);

4.    Three letters of reference, including one letter from a language instructor who can attest to the proficiency level of the applicant; Please note that the Workshop cannot accept forwarded recommendations; letters in support of the Title VIII applications must be sent directly by the recommender to the Summer Language Workshop by the recommender:

5.    Official graduate and undergraduate transcripts. Current IU graduate students can request that the Workshop office obtain their transcripts directly. Note that our office can accept the following:

o    Official Paper Transcript Delivered by Mail. Please have the official paper transcript(s) sent to the

o    Official Electronic Transcript Delivered by E-mail if the transcript is sent from the institution directly to the Summer Language Workshop (swseel@indiana.edu). When requesting a PDF transcript you must enter swseel@indiana.edu as the Recipient E-mail. Please note that we cannot accept PDF transcripts that are forwarded to us: all official transcripts must be sent from your home institution’s Office of the Registrar directly to the Summer Language Workshop (swseel@indiana.edu).

o    Current IU graduate students can request that the Workshop office obtain their transcripts directly from the IU Office of the Registrar at no cost to the applicant.

6.    Applications must be submitted to swseel@indiana.edu with the subject line “Title VIII Portable Application” by March 20, 2017. Applications submitted after this date will not receive priority consideration.
