Indiana University Outdoor Adventures promotes purposeful recreation by providing diverse programs, products, and services for Indiana University and the surrounding communities. IUOA fosters personal growth and active lifestyles through experiential education, facilitated reflection, environmental stewardship, and leadership development.

IUOA educates our leaders with the knowledge and compassion to promote collaborative teamwork, positive communication, and group development.

Experiential Education:

IUOA’s facilitated programming empowers personal growth through active participation and guided reflection.

 Community and Diversity:

IUOA fosters the development of communities of individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities to work together to achieve common goals.

Environmental Stewardship:

IUOA seeks to increase awareness of the environment and promote the conservation of the earth’s ecosystems and resources through meaningful adventure recreation.

Health and Wellness:

IUOA’s programs and services provide a myriad of options for inspiring individuals to pursue active and healthy lifestyles, which are essential elements of personal well-being.

Risk Management:

Our leaders seek to identify and manage the risks inherent in IUOA’s programs. While holding safety as the highest priority, our leaders facilitate adventurous activities which provide the foundation for profound individual and community growth.

IU Outdoor Adventures began in 1972 as a committee of the Indiana Memorial Union Board. The early years involved occasional trips to local recreation destinations and a small fleet of rental equipment. After years of operating under the leadership of a graduate assistant from the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Dave Calvin became IUOA’s first professionally appointed Program Coordinator in 1995. Today, IUOA has greatly expanded to include over 120 trips and academic courses each year, 60 student Trip Leaders and professional instructors, a comprehensive rental operation, and IU’s only indoor climbing facility. IUOA moved to Eigenmann Hall in 2010, yet maintains its vital academic relationship with the School of Public Health and continues to hold firm to its historical foundation as a student leadership program of the IMU.
