Division of Crustaceans
The crustacean collection concentrates on crayfish (Decapoda) and includes 50,000
specimens, with most being from over 3,500 sites in Indiana. The collection also includes
specimens from Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Ohio. Recently published
is a checklist of crayfish and freshwater shrimp of Indiana (Simon, 2001). The crustacean
collection has benefited from donations of materials from Indiana State University, Indiana
Department of Environmental Management, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Water Quality
from the City of Muncie. The oldest specimens in the collection are from the 1970 surveys
of the White River by the Bureau of Water Quality. The crustacean collection also includes
larval crayfish and fossil materials. The Division possesses the paratypes for Cambarus
(Tubericambarus) polychromatus and Cambarus (Lacunicambarus) erythrodactylus.
