Indiana University's flagship campus is located in Bloomington, Indiana, a small Midwestern city in the green hills of southern Indiana. Summer is a wonderful time to be in Bloomington and on the IU campus. Our beautiful campus, founded in 1820, has many buildings of native Indiana limestone set about with abundant trees, flowers, and lawns. Summer days in Bloomington can vary from bright and balmy to hot and humid. Light, casual attire and good walking shoes are the summer "uniform" on campus and in town. From the Sample Gates on the west side of campus, you can look straight down the center of town, Kirkwood Avenue, to the Courthouse Square. A thriving downtown of restaurants, shops, and night spots invites both visitors and locals to explore, eat, and browse.
