Carly Lawson realized that interning for Junior Achievement of Central Indiana was not only an opportunity to enrich her education, but also a chance to work for a nonprofit organization. The IU Bloomington junior has never worked for a nonprofit before and has not had the challenge of juggling numerous tasks at a job. The three-month internship with Junior Achievement of Central Indiana in Indianapolis is giving Lawson, a native of Carmel, Indiana, the chance to not only help others but to also sharpen her marketing skills. Lawson, 21, is working at the organization as an event coordinator and will be helping the nonprofit operate.
For Lawson, no two days at the internship are alike. She was the contact person for the catering portion of the Junior Achievement of Central Indiana Best and Brightest event, working to promote the event and garner participation. In June, Lawson handled the creation, organization, and implementation of a Best and Brightest finalist function. She continues to work with her supervisor to register campers every morning in June and July. She will also be doing a number of smaller tasks as they need to be completed.
Lawson applied for the internship throughthe Civic Leadership Development programin the IU Kelley School of Business. The director of the program put Lawson in contact withJunior Achievement and the organization eventually chose Lawson for the summer internship.
Lawson, a business major focusing on marketing and management, will also use her marketing skills at the internship as she designs brochures and posters.
After graduating from IU, Lawson wants to work with people. “I hope to work in a position I love and care about,” Lawson says. “I want to take my strengths and use them to my advantage and also to my employer's advantage.”
Lawson talks more about her experience this summer and how she is making an impact through her work at Junior Achievement.
