At 23, Derek Molter has already enhanced what he has learned in the classroom with real-world experience. However, the IU Bloomington law student, who earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004 from IU Bloomington, is ready to gain more from his summer experience as a clerk in Washington D.C., working for the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and
Homeland Security.

In the past, Molter has interned for Indiana Senator Richard
Lugar, and he has worked for four years for R. T. Miller &
Associates in Bloomington.

“I learned an enormous amount about government and politics from Senator Lugar and his staff, and I have really developed many of the skills necessary for legal practice while working at the law firm,” Molter says.

After one year at the IU School of Law Bloomington, Molter says he has yet to select an area of specialization. He says his past experiences with politics and with Washington will likely lead him far from his hometown of Kentland, Indiana, to focus on government and political work.

Molter shares why he is interested in working in the
Capitol for his 2005 summer internship, and what he hopes to learn from it.
