The Office of International Programs (OIP) administers a range of grant
programs and exchange opportunities to support IU student research and
learning with an international focus. OIP grant
programs for students are grants which are funded by the Office of
International Programs from Indiana University funds. External student
competitions managed by OIP are competitions whose application processes
for IU faculty are managed by the OIP but for which final selection and funding is determined by an external agency.
International Enhancement Grants
To help students pursue academic training which adds or enhances an international
component of their graduate degree program. Training activities supported
include: enrollment in a foreign language or an area studies course not
offered at IU; participation in a structured international internship or
a formal training program or workshop on an international topic.
Award: up to $2,000.
Deadlines: mid-October for spring; mid-February for summer; mid-April
for fall.

Graduate Student Exchanges
The Office of International Programs maintains exchange agreements which
provide a variety of opportunities for Indiana University graduate students
to conduct research, study, and teach at selected partner institutions
abroad. Applicants may be students from any discipline, department, or
campus. Each applicant must submit a proposal for a program that would
constitute an integral part of a well-conceived graduate degree program
at Indiana University. See annual announcement for list of eligible partner
institutions.

Summer Pre-Dissertation Travel Grants
To support research-related summer travel abroad a full year prior to
conducting dissertation research abroad. Activities supported include
exploring potential research sites, archives, or other research resources;
establishing institutional affiliations; identifying and meeting local
scholars and contacts.
Award: transportation and $1,000 stipend.

Latin American Fellowship
This fellowship is jointly funded by IU and the Indiana federation of Clubs to
support graduate research and study in Latin America.
Award: $1,500.

Starr Fellowships
Approximately five fellowships are awarded annually from the Starr
Foundation endowment to full-time graduate students from the People's
Republic of China who demonstrate satisfactory progress toward a degree.
Awards: Approximately $8,000.
In order to qualify, a student must be enrolled
full time in a graduate or professional program at Indiana
University and be making satisfactory progress toward a degree. He or
she must also be a citizen of the People's Republic of China (US
permanent residents cannot be considered). Applicants will be evaluated on the
basis of academic achievement, goals and promise, as well as financial need
(student should not have departmental support).

Won-Joon Yoon Memorial Scholarship
On Sunday 4 July 1999, a bright and promising young Korean graduate student was killed as he was entering his church. He was the victim of a random act of extremist violence. Indiana University is united in deploring the hatred and intolerance that caused this senseless tragedy and is committed to the principles and ideals that make this university a place where people from all walks of life and from all nations and religions, can join together in pursuit of knowledge and mutual respect. As a way of underscoring Mr. Yoon’s legacy, Indiana University established this scholarship.
The Won-Joon Yoon Scholarship will provide financial support for IU students who have exemplified tolerance and understanding across racial and religious lines through service, personal commitment, academic achievement and future potential.

Candidates may be graduate students or undergraduates who have completed at least one academic semester of study at Indiana University at the time of application. Candidates may be citizens of any country.

Candidates must be full-time students pursuing Indiana University degrees.

Candidates may be self-nominated (apply themselves) or be nominated by Indiana University faculty or staff members.

Candidates must submit a statement (not to exceed 750 words) describing what the scholarship will enable them to accomplish in their academic programs. The scholarship should be taken up during summer 2008 or the 2008-2009 academic year.

Candidates must submit a resume or curriculum vitae.

Three letters of support are required, at least one of which should be from an Indiana University faculty member.

Faculty or staff who nominate candidates, please provide a letter of nomination and at least two additional letters of support. If possible, please also enclose a copy of the student’s resume or curriculum vitae.
Award: The scholarship has a value of approximately $2,500.

The OIP informs and advises IU graduate students on the application
processes for a number of prestigious external grants that support
international studies, such as the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships, the
Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays programs, the DAAD grants, and the
Social Science Research Council Predissertation Fellowship.
IIE Fulbright Program for Graduate Study and Research Abroad
These Fulbright grants, administered by the Institute of International
Education (IIE), support graduate study or research abroad in any academic
or professional field in participating countries.

DAAD Annual Grants
The Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), supports graduating
seniors and graduate students for study or research in Germany in a broad
range of academic disciplines.
Award: air transportation, tuition, maintenance and book allowances, insurance.

Students for the Rhodes, Marshall, Churchill and Mitchell scholarships
will have to be nominated by Indiana University and have to submit an
application to the nominating committee. The application should include:
- A 1000-word statement discussing your most important activities, interests and honors in college; your proposed course of study, including name of the university you would like to attend; and your career plans. Please include your name, regular and e-mail addresses, phone number and IU student identification number
- A list of your activities and honors while in college, including prizes, scholarships, offices held, and extracurricular interests
- Two letters of recommendation that comment on your work and accomplishments sent directly by the recommenders to the address below
The IU deadline for all is September 17. There will be an information meeting about all the scholarships on September 7 at 3:30 p.m. in the Honors House, 324 N. Jordan.

Rhodes Scholarship (http://www.rhodesscholar.org)
The Rhodes Scholarship has been awarded since 1902 to outstanding students from around the world. This scholarship is intended for students of proven intellectual achievement, integrity, leadership, energy, and concern for others. All fields of study are considered although the proposed course of study must be available at Oxford University.
To be eligible, the applicant
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must be in the senior year (or beyond) at a four-year college or university in the United States
- Must be between 18 and 23 years of age
- The IU committee requires candidates to have a minimum GPA of 3.7.
National deadline: October 1 (for institutional endoresements and referee letter -- October 9).

Support for two to three years of graduate study at almost any university in
the United Kingdom. Geared toward students who have distinguished academic
records, strong aspirations for graduate study and who are in their senior
year or within two years after graduation; no age limit. 40 scholarships

Supports one year of graduate study in engineering, math, or science at
Churchill College, Cambridge University, Great Britain. Geared toward
students of exceptional ability who are in their senior year or beyond and
19-26 years of age. 10 scholarships awarded each year. (Take
GRE in October so scores are available by November.)

This scholarship, sponsored by The US-Ireland Alliance, was named in honor of former Senator George J. Mitchell. Senator Mitchell made a pivotal contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship encourages American students to serve their community and country, and exhibit qualities of intellectual distinction, leadership, integrity, excellence and fairness. The scholarship intends to familiarize and engage the next generation of American leaders with the island of Ireland.
The Mitchell Scholarship provides support for one academic year of postgraduate study at institutions of higher learning in Ireland, including the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland. All fields of study are considered that these universities offer and for which students are prepared.
To be eligible, an applicant
- Must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 30
- Must be a senior who will have completed an undergraduate degree no later than the summer before entering an Irish university
- Must have a minimum GPA of 3.7 (not required, but recommended)
Nominees must submit:
- An endorsement by the nominating institution
- An on-line application
- A personal essay of no more than 1000 words specifying the proposed course of study in Ireland, field of interest and justification for the proposed study in Ireland
- A statement of achievement/activities
- One photocopy of the nominees birth certificate, passport, or documented evidence of U.S. citizenship (a drivers license is NOT a citizenship document); ten passport-size photos with the nominees signature on the back of each photo; ten copies of the nominees college transcript (one must be a certified transcript)
- Five to eight recommendation letters submitted on-line by professors or other persons familiar with the nominee's academic progress or employment

EPA Marshall Scholarships (http://www.marshallscholarship.org/applicationepa.html)
Students nominated by Indiana University and then selected in national competition for a Marshall Scholarship may wish to apply for an EPA Marshall Scholarship. Jointly funded by the Marshall Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these Scholarships will support research specifically in the area of the environment and can be in any related field. Applicants may study at any appropriate UK Institution.
To be eligible for the EPA Marshall Scholarship, applicants must first be selected as Marshall Scholars, applying in the usual way, and must be pursuing a graduate degree in one of the following areas:
- Physical, life or systematic sciences
- Engineering and technology
- Economics
- Social and behavioral sciences
- Urban and regional planning
- Communication science
The proposed program of study must be demonstrably relevant to environmental protection, restoration or stewardship; environmental public health; or ecosystem health. Applicants whose work emphasizes the study of global environmental problems, international collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving, technology exchange programs or research to improve international dialog regarding the environment will be given first consideration.
The Marshall Commission will pay for the first two years of the Scholarship and the Scholar will spend this time in the UK. The EPA will pay for up to three additional years of study, which can be spent in the UK or the
US, providing this research culminates in a doctoral degree.
