Cultural Exhibit: “In the Shadow of Cortés: From Veracruz to Mexico City”

This exhibit combines ethnographic interviews with people living along the route of the Conquest, murals and rare books from the era, and a documentary photography of 21st century Mexican culture, to help illuminate the past and its impact on the present.

Suzanne Thomas, an internationally known blues guitarist and vocalist, will share her experience as an abandoned biracial child in South Korea, where she lived until she was adopted and moved to the United States.

International Movie Night: Diarios de Motocicleta

An interesting film about two young men who embark in a road trip full of adventures before reaching their final destination, a medical clinic aiding a leper colony.  The film is based on the journals of Ernesto Guevara, leader of the Cuban revolution.

Living Under the Shadow of Castro: “From a Daughter’s Perspective”

Alina Fernandez, the daughter of Fidel Castro, shares her first-person, intimate account of growing up in Cuba.  Through her insight as one of the Cuban elite, Alina guides you through her life and describes the surrounding political environment during the 1960’s and 70’s.  Weaving in her unique sense of style and humor, she reveals exciting and suspenseful anecdotes, snapshots of Cuban society, her inside scoop on Cuban politics, and a detailed view of her father.

Latin American Chamber Music Ensemble: “Tributos”

This special concert will honor Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) on the fiftieth anniversary of his death, and celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Chilean composer Juan Orrego-Salas (born 1919), who founded the Latin American Music Center.  New work dedicated to Villa-Lobos by Uruguayan composer Elbio Barilari will also be featured.

2009 Indy International Festival

The festival is the signature event of the Nationalities Council of Indiana, a not-for-profit volunteer organization of more than 50 ethnic and cultural groups dedicated to education, communication and cultural exchange.
