Avian Flu
November 7, 2005
The Office of International Services, in conjunction with other Indiana University administrators and medical personnel, is closely monitoring news about the Avian Flu known as influenza A subtype H5N1. We are not discouraging student travel to or from any part of the world (other than those restricted by a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning) because the risk of humans being infected by this virus is very low at this time.
However, we recommend that students traveling to any of the countries where there have been outbreaks of avian influenza A subtype H5N1 to avoid environments where they might come into close contact with poultry and other birds (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Rumania, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia [Siberia], Thailand and Turkey). Human infections by avian influenza A subtype H5N1 have only impacted individuals who came into close contact with infected poultry in Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
We recommend that students traveling to or from the areas mentioned above consult the following resources:
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- General H5N1 Information: www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/gen-info/facts.htm and
- H5N1 Travel Information: www.cdc.gov/travel/other/avian_influenza_se_asia_2005.htm
We will update this site on a regular basis, as more information becomes available.
