Enrollment in University Courses

As an H-1B, you may enroll in university courses.  Course enrollment should be incidental to your H1-B status as your employment with the university should be your primary activity.

If you are thinking about enrolling in a course, you may also want to consider “auditing” the course.  Auditing a course enables you to attend all of the lectures but at a much lower price; however, you will not get academic credit for the course.  A typical graduate level course would cost about $2000* if taken for credit; that same course costs about $85* if audited.

Any course with a number of 500 or above (e.g. R515) is a graduate level course.  These courses are for Master’s and doctoral level students and thus are generally more challenging.  The numbers 100–499 denote undergraduate courses.  Undergraduate courses tend to have younger students.

* Plus related fees.  As an H-1B or H-4 visa holder, you may be eligible for the Indiana resident rate.  For more information, please visit the Registrar’s website.
