A Social Security Number (SSN) is required to receive payroll benefits from Indiana University.  To apply for a SSN, take the following documents to the Social Security Office in Bloomington:

  • Passport
  • I-94 Card
  • H-1B Approval Notice (Form I-797)
  • A second form of photo identification (e.g. Indiana University ID card).

The Social Security Office is located at 515 West Patterson Drive, Bloomington.  Excluding national holidays, the office is open Monday–Friday, 9am–4pm.  From the university to the Social Security Office it takes approximately 10 minutes by car, 15 minutes by bus, or 35 minutes on foot.  If you wish to take the bus, you should take the Bus #2 South from the main bus station at Fourth and Washington.  You will get off at Grimes Lane.  With a student ID or a faculty/staff bus pass, you can ride Bloomington Transit for free.  A bus pass can be requested at www.iubus.indiana.edu/campus_bus/free_buspass.
