About J-2 Status

A dependent ( a spouse or unmarried child under the age of 21) of a J-1 Exchange Visitor might be eligible to apply for a J-2 visa if the dependent has the intention of residing in the US during the J-1 scholar’s program.  A spouse and/or children who plan to visit only for a short vacation may be eligible to apply for other visa types.  A child over the age of 21 must apply for a different visa status in order to enter or remain in the US.  Please consult with an advisor in the Office of International Services if dependents will be accompanying the J-1 visitor to the US.

Funding

In addition to the funding documentation needed for a J-1 Scholar ($1200 per month), the Office of International Services must see proof of financial support for J-2 dependents (spouse and/or children) prior to issuing immigration documents.  The minimum funding requirements are $783 per month for the first dependent, and $300 per month for each additional dependent.  For example, a family of four would need to show proof of $1200/month for the J-1 scholar, $783/month for the spouse, and $300/month per child, for a total of $2583 per month, for the duration of the program.
