Scholar Newsletter – June 2008

What’s New?

Scholar Outreach:

The Office of International Services would like to help you make the most of your time at IU.  Do you have an interest in meeting other scholars here at IU?  Would you like OIS to plan more activities for international scholars?  Would you like to have an online social network group, such as on Facebook?  Would you like the opportunity to showcase your research or other projects?  Please share your thoughts and ideas with Jennifer Ashcraft (J1 Scholar Advisor) at jeashcra@indiana.edu.

Scholar Profile

Each month, we feature an international scholar in order to recognize their activities and accomplishments, both at IU and abroad.  We hope this information will be interesting and help you get to know others on campus.  This month, our featured scholar is Dr. Weiguo Pang.

Dr. Weiguo Pang

Dr. Weiguo Pang

Dr. Pang arrived at IU in January 2008 from Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.  He is a visiting research scholar at the Center for Evaluation and Educational Policy in the IU School of Education.  Dr. Pang’s specialty is educational psychology, and his research is focused on secondary education.  He explained, “My research at IU focuses on a cooperative survey of the high school student engagement between China and USA.  Recently we have finished a survey of 8000 participants in China.  We believe our research results will help the governments make more relevant educational policies.”

Dr. Pang received both his BA in preschool education and MA in developmental psychology from Shandong Teacher’s University in the 1990s.  In June, 2001, he completed his Ph.D. at East China Normal University (ECNU), where one month later he joined the faculty.  In 2003, he won the Distinguished Scholar Award issued by the Shanghai Municipal government.  In 2005, he earned the National High Education Award for Excellent Instruction from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

After a year at IU, Dr. Pang will return to China and continue his work at the Department of Psychology at East China Normal University (ECNU), where he has plans for promoting cooperation between IU and ECNU in both educational and psychological research areas.

We asked Dr. Pang to share some additional information about his experience at IU:

Q: Why did you choose to come to IU?

Q: What is one thing you enjoy about IU or the city of Bloomington?
A: In my spare time, I like going around the campus, taking photographs and breathing fresh air.
Q: Are you involved in any activities or events at IU or in Bloomington?
A: Activities organized by OIS and International Center are pretty good.  I almost go every time.  I like the music concerts very much.
Q: What advice do you have for other scholars, especially those new to IU and Bloomington?
A: IUB boasts a lot of excellent faculty and students.  Keep good communications with them, and you will learn more.  Enjoy your life in Bloomington!

Simon Hall, the Bloomington campus’ newest scientific research facility, has won high honors in R&D Magazine’s 2008 “Lab of the Year,” an architecture competition for research facilities.  Flad & Associates (architects), based in Madison, Wisconsin, worked closely with IU architects to design a 141,000-square foot structure that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers in fields as disparate as biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.  The Lab of the Year judging panel was composed of architects, engineers, lab planners, equipment suppliers and the editors of R&D Magazine and Laboratory Design Newsletter.  Simon Hall earned the highest rating among this year’s submissions.  Click here for a brief flash animation of Simon Hall photos.
