Indiana University students, faculty and staff will find greater coverage and ease of use for wireless devices (such as laptop computers) once IU’s new wireless hardware is installed. University Information Technology Services (UITS) will replace current wireless hardware—some of which is now more than six years old—with a modern system that is much more capable of meeting the university’s needs now and in the future. The broader IU community, as well as IU affiliates and guests, will find it easier to connect securely to the IU network and the Internet. UITS staff will begin installing the new hardware in May, with plans to have most new access points installed at IU Bloomington and IUPUI early in the fall semester.
Each month, the OIS Scholar Newsletter will include the Scholar Profile to introduce and recognize the activities of a J1 Scholar at IU. We hope this information will be interesting to other scholars, and help you get to know others on campus. This month, our featured scholar is Daniela Candillari.
Daniela Candillari
Dr. Candillari comes from Maribor, Slovenia to the IU Jacobs School of Music Opera Department. Her formal education in music began at Musikuniversitaet in Graz, Austria, where she obtained her Bachelors and Masters in Piano (1998 and 2002, respectively). In 2003, she earned the Scholarship for Excellence and Development in Maribor, Slovenia. In 2004 she earned a Fulbright award and came to the IU School of Music as a visiting student. She completed a Masters in Jazz Studies at IU in 2006. She then returned to Austria, where she completed a Ph.D. in Musicology at the Musikuniversitaet in Vienna (2007).
Dr. Candillari has been working as a Visiting Lecturer and Opera Coach at the IU Jacobs School of Music since August 2007. This past year she prepared three of the six operas that were produced by the IU Opera Theater, Susannah by C. Floyd, A Wedding by W. Bolcom, and Les contes d’Hoffmann by J. Offenbach. She works with singers on their individual roles, which includes language instruction, dramatic intent, and stylistic traditions of opera. She worked on French diction in the Les contes d’Hoffmann opera, and will work with singers on German diction for Merry Wives of Windsor this coming fall. Other preparations for the operas include working with conductors and state directors during the rehearsal process. Dr. Candillari also prepares singers for the Opera Workshop, a class taught by Carol Vaness. In the workshop, 15 scenes from various operas are staged and performed at the end of the semester, and Dr. Candillari serves as conductor for this performance.

Commencement (graduation) ceremonies for IU Bloomington. The ceremonies bring many families and visitors to campus, so expect an increase in traffic and crowds at restaurants.
First Summer Session classes begin.
Memorial Day holiday. No classes. University offices are closed. Many businesses are closed or will have special sales. Enjoy the long weekend!
Most events at the International Center have ended for the academic year. However, English Conversation Club will continue to meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout the summer. Everyone is welcome from 1–3pm at the International Center (111 S. Jordan Avenue). The IC will hold some activities during the summer, such as a trip to Southern Indiana, summer concerts, belly dancing classes, and movie/pizza nights. More information will be emailed to students and scholars during the summer as details become available.
Now that spring is here, there are so many things to do in Bloomington!
The City of Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department offers a wide variety of facilities and programs, and many of them are free! Get out and enjoy a sunny day on the walking and biking trails, attend an outdoor concert at a local park, or take your children to one of their family-friendly activities. The city’s outdoor Farmer’s Market is also now open on Saturdays from 8am–1pm at the Showers Common Plaza, 401 N. Morton Street. For more information, on any of these programs or services, visit the Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department’s website.
The IU Art Museum will host several special events this month. On Saturday, May 10, there will be a special concert, An Evening of Japanese Art and Music, from 5–7pm at the museum’s second floor atrium. The museum will also host the Jordan River Fest on Sunday, May 18, which will include local art, literature, music, and food, all for FREE! For more information, visit the museum’s website.
Indiana University is celebrating the 75th anniversary of Thomas Hart Benton’s Indiana Murals. Benton (1889–1975) was a Missouri native who studied art in Paris and New York. When Indiana officials commissioned him to produce the murals, he threw himself into the project, studying history and traveling across the state to get a sense of Indiana’s people and geography. Benton produced 22 large panels covering themes in Indiana history, and the entire mural stretched for 250 feet. Herman B. Wells, early in his tenure as IU president, arranged for the state to give the murals to Indiana University. Sixteen of the panels are in the lobby of the IU Auditorium, two are in Woodburn Hall and four are in the old University Theatre. Benton’s murals focused on everyday life, and he insisted on presenting the bad with the good in Hoosier history. The murals have been a source of controversy and a topic of campus discussions for years. Shallow Creek: Thomas Hart Benton and American Waterways will be featured in the Special Exhibitions Gallery at the IU Art Museum until May 18, 2008. For more information, visit the musuem’s website. The Indiana primary elections will take place on May 6. Each state in the US holds primary elections or caucuses to select candidates for the general election, which will be held in November. Though much news and attention has been directed at the US Presidential race, Indiana residents will also be casting votes for the US House of Representatives and US Senate, as well as state offices including Governor, Indiana House of Representatives, Indiana Senate, and judges. Only US citizens aged 18 or older are eligible to register to vote.
Remember, travel outside the US includes your home country, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, and includes any form of transportation (land, air, sea). Also, J-2 dependent status is tied to your J-1 status, so consult with OIS if you will be traveling without your dependent spouse and/or children. If your DS-2019 is issued by an organization other than IU (such as Fulbright), please consult with them regarding your travel.
