International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the US Department of State and the US Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Any individual who has been in the United States for more than six months in the previous year in J-1 status is not eligible to enter the US as a J-1 Research Scholar or Professor for a 12-month period. Time spent in the J-1 Short-term Scholar category does not count towards the 12-month bar. Individuals subject to the 12-month bar may return to the US in another visa type or as a J-1 in another category such as Short-term Scholar or Student.
