About J-1 Exchange Visitor Status

There are multiple categories within the J-1 program.  The categories used most often at Indiana University include:

  • Student:

engaged in full-time study making progress toward academic objective.  Duration of stay from three weeks until academic objective is achieved.

  • Research Scholar:

conducting research, observing or consulting in connection with a research project.  Duration of stay from three weeks to five years maximum.

  • Short-term Scholar:

for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating special skills.  Duration of stay is a maximum of six months.

  • Professor:

primarily teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting.  Duration of stay from three weeks to five years maximum.

  • Specialist:

expert in a field of specialized knowledge or skill coming to the US to observe, consult, or demonstrate special skills.  Duration of stay is one year maximum.

The J-1 Exchange Visitor designation is not an option for international employees accepting tenture-track positions.
