International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.  This joint initiative of the US Department of State and the US Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

About J-1 Exchange Visitor Status

There are multiple categories within the J-1 program.  The categories used most often at Indiana University include:

  • Student:

    engaged in full-time study making progress toward academic objective.  Duration of stay from three weeks until academic objective is achieved.

  • Research Scholar:

    conducting research, observing or consulting in connection with a research project.  Duration of stay from three weeks to five years maximum.

  • Short-term Scholar:

    for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating special skills.  Duration of stay is a maximum of six months.

  • Professor:

    primarily teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting.  Duration of stay from three weeks to five years maximum.

  • Specialist:

    expert in a field of specialized knowledge or skill coming to the US to observe, consult, or demonstrate special skills.  Duration of stay is one year maximum.

The J-1 Exchange Visitor designation is not an option for international employees accepting tenture-track positions.
