University Enrollment

J-1 professors and research scholars are permitted to enroll in classes as long as the classes are incidental to the primary activity of the exchange program.  The scholar must continue to pursue the program objectives and the program must continue to fulfill the objectives of the professor or research scholar category.  Enrolling in more than six credits per semester may affect immigration status for J-1 exchange visitors in categories other than student category.  If enrollment in classes or a degree program becomes the primary objective, J-1 status as a professor or scholar is no longer appropriate.

An International Services fee is assessed to all international students and scholars who enroll in classes.  The fee supports the specialized services related to immigration and visa advising, employment counseling and authorization, tax assistance, and health insurance administration.  The fee is automatically charged to your bursar account each fall and spring semester if you enroll in classes.  The fee is not assessed for summer enrollment.  For rate and fee information regarding enrollment or auditing of courses contact the Office of the Bursar.

According to the Registrar’s Office, the visiting scholar coordinator in the academic department is the one that can set up the scholar to register for classes.  If the academic department does not have access, the department should contact Kathy Shields in the Registrar’s Office at 855-2480.
