November 11–20, 2009

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.  This joint initiative of the US Department of State and the US Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Finding Jobs

Important

J-1 international students require authorization from the Office of International Services (OIS) for on-campus employment, even if employed as a SAA (Student Academic Appointee: AI, GA, TA, for example) prior to commencement of employment.  All international students in F or J status require authorization from OIS or USCIS for off-campus employment before beginning any work.  Additionally, international students are not eligible for any job which requires “work-study” approval.

On-Campus Jobs

The Career Development Center (CDC) is located at 625 N. Jordan (the northwest corner of 10th and Jordan, across from the Main Library and the Health Center).  The CDC provides on-campus and off-campus employment information for IU students.  The CDC maintains listings of many open positions on their website.  Students are encouraged to check the job listings on a regular basis because new jobs are added frequently.  The information provided on the web and in the office allows the student to make direct contact with the employer to arrange an interview.  Take care to read the contact information, hourly rate, and job duties.

Job Fairs—Employer Events

The CDC and other offices sponsor Job Fairs at various times during the year.  Visit the CDC website for full details.  Student Job Fairs are usually held on campus at the end of the week before each semester begins and in April or May for summer positions.

Tips for Preparing for Job Fairs

  • Have a resume ready
  • Be comfortable with interviewing skills
  • Research organizations that will be present
  • Be ready to initiate conversation with employers
  • Dress appropriately

Other Resources

Many University departments and offices do not list their job opportunities with the CDC.  Because many positions are filled directly by departments, you should contact your academic unit and professors for possible job openings and hourly employment.

Potential On-Campus Employers

You need to contact each office separately to ask about open positions and to apply.

  • Center Desks at Residence Halls
  • Residential Dining Halls
  • Residential Halls’ Center Stores
  • Indiana Memorial Union (many kinds of positions)
  • Main Library and school libraries
  • Museums
  • Recreational Sports (referees, supervisors, etc.)

IDS Classified Ad Section

The Indiana Daily Student (IDS) newspaper has many job listings in the classified section.  Be sure to look for hourly, on-campus jobs, unless you qualify for off-campus employment.  To find out if you qualify for off-campus employment, visit the off-campus employment page on our website.
