Change of Address Requirement

Providing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with an update of your new address in the US every time you move is required by law (see citation below).  Each time you move, within ten (10) days of moving (even within Bloomington!), you are required to update the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with your new address.  As an international student, your change of address must be submitted to the international office, who must update your address in SEVIS.

As a J-1 student, if your DS-2019 was issued by Indiana University, this is a fairly easy process.  If you change your “Local” address in OneStart, the Office of International Services is notified that you have updated or added a “Local” address, and we will then submit your address change to USCIS through SEVIS.

To update or add your “Local” address, you will need to:

  • Log onto OneStart.
  • Click on the following links: Self-Service → My Personal Addresses → Update My Personal Addresses.
  • Select “Local” as the type of address you are updating.  Note: You can have several addresses listed in OneStart, but you will need to be certain to have a “Local” address listed as well.  If you do not have a “Local” address listed, you may need to ADD a new address, and check the box next to “Local”.  Without a “Local” address, the information will not be submitted to our office and will not be updated in SEVIS.

If you find that you are unable to update or add your “Local” address in OneStart, you may log into iStart (istart.iu.edu) and submit an E-Form to update your local address.  But begin with OneStart before submitting your request to iStart.

If your DS-2019 was not issued by Indiana University, then you will need to notify your program sponsor of any address changes within ten (10) days of moving, each time you move.

While you are on Academic Training (before or after you complete your degree requirements), you are still required to update your address within ten (10) days of moving, each time you move. Log into OneStart to update your “Local” address!
