SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. The bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) has created this internet-based system in order to maintain current information on nonimmigrant students, exchange visitors, and their dependents (i.e. all those in F or J visa status). SEVIS tracks F and J visa holders from the time they receive their documents (I-20, visa, etc.) until they complete their programs. SEVIS links with colleges and universities, US embassies and consulates, US ports of entry, the Department of State, and exchange visitor programs.
SEVIS Overview for IU Students: pdf
Effective September 1, 2004, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began requiring the collection of a one-time fee of $100 from certain international students and visiting scholars. The fee is required to cover operational costs of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Additional questions or concerns regarding the SEVIS fee should be directed to the Office of International Services, 306 Franklin Hall, 812-855-9086.
