Foreign Language

In addition to fulfilling the College's foreign language requirement (4th semester proficiency in a single foreign language), International Studies students must also take another two foreign language courses as part of the requirements for an International Studies major. IU offers 77 languages, 40 of these for a minimum of a a 4-semester sequence.

Students may elect to deepen their understanding of their first foreign language (used in fulfillment of the College's foreign language requirement) by taking 2 courses beyond the 4th semester level, or they may elect to broaden their knowledge of language by choosing to take 2 semesters at the beginning level of a second foreign language. Or, they may elect to take the first semester of a second language and the first semester of a third language. Non-native speakers of English may establish proficiency in their native language in completion of the foreign language requirement for the International Studies major. These students should contact the International Studies advisor for more information.

Special Credit
Students who earn exemption from one or more semesters in a non-native language may be be eligible for special credit toward graduation. For more information, see the your College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin under the heading Fundamental Skills Requirements: Foreign Language.

Note: American Sign Language and Lakota may fulfill the foreign language requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences but not the additional foreign language requirement of International Studies.
