Vol. 12, No. 1 Indiana University Kokomo Library Government Publications
by Diane J. Bever The Indiana University Kokomo Library has been a select depository for United States government publications since 1969. The library is a congressional designated depository which serves the 5th U.S. Congressional District of Indiana. In addition to the I UK Library there are two selective housing sites located at Kokomo High School and Saint Joseph Hospital. These selective housing sites allow us to better serve the our district. The library currently selects approximately 25% of the items supplied by the government printing office. The collection includes a "basic collection" as outlined in the Federal Depository Manual with special emphasis given to selecting census, labor, education, and health materials. The library also receives Indiana to pographical maps from the USGS which are housed in the geology lab. The library CARS (Computer-Assisted Reference Service) Rom houses a LAN (local area network) which includes internet access to government information and two CD-ROM titles, NTDB (National Trade Data Bank) and FTI (Foreign Traders Index). A dedicated workstation allows users access to the many government CD-ROM titles including census materials. The majority of government publications are located in the government documents collection located on the main level of the library near the reference collection. Since 1994 government publications have been added to the online catalog. The IUCAT (online catalog), the print Monthly Catalog, and the GPO Monthly Catalog (SilverPlatter) CD-ROM database allow access to the documents collection. The government documents collection is managed by one librarian who also has reference responsibilities. All reference staff assist with government documents questions making this collection an integral part of the IUK Library collections.
