Past Issues of InULA Notes Digitized and Made Available Electronically

During the spring and summer semesters of 2001, the InULA Communications Committee undertook to digitize all available back issues of InULA Notes (and its predecessors, InULA Scoop Sheet, InULA Quarterly and InULA Innuendo). In all, 89 issues were scanned, totaling 763 pages. The earliest existing issues date from the fall of 1969. Some issues had been bound and added to the Indiana University-Bloomington Main Library collection, but the run was far from complete. Other issues only existed in the InULA archives, but this too was less than complete. Further complicating matters is the fact that apparently there is no historical record indicating exactly how many issues were actually published over the years. Thus although all available issues were digitized, it is not completely certain whether or not the run is complete. Should any member have an issue on file that is not represented in the digital holdings, please contact the InULA Communications Committee. The digitization work was carried out by two student employees of the Indiana University Digital Library Program, Terri Geitgey and Shawn Bailey under the supervision of the DLP Digital Media Specialist Jenn Riley.

The individual page images were scanned as TIFF format images and then the page images were concatenated into separate PDF files for each individual issue. The PDF files were then made available on the InULA web-site at http://www.iu.edu/~inula/notes/archive.html where the issues are arranged chronologically. The TIFF images have been archived on the Indiana University HPSS mass storage system should InULA decide in the future to make the issues available in another format such as OCRed text files marked-up in some fashion (XML or TEI). A proposal has also been made to create an on-line index of the back issues to facilitate access to the contents.

As current Chairman of the InULA Communications Committee, I which to especially thank Director of the IU Digital Library Program Kris Brancolini as well as Jenn Riley for their willingness to work with InULA in completing this digitization project.
