Meet the New(ish) Librarians

InULA is an organization focused on the librarian not the library, the person not the job. In the interest of getting to know each other better as people, InULA Notes regularly imposes on new(ish) librarians to share some of their personal history and interests. Read on to learn about Denise Buhr (IPFW).

Denise Buhr, Reference & Information Services Librarian, IPFW Helmke Library

It may be a stretch to call Denise a new librarian, since she had been working at IPFW's Helmke Library part-time for several years before joining the Reference & Information Services Department full-time this past year. Now she serves as the librarian liaising with the College of Visual & Performing Arts, the departments of both Communication and Journalism, and as the University Archives Coordinator. Denise Buhr (rhymes with Brrr! It is cold!) not only works to bring the library resources to students in her liaison areas, she brings the students' work to the library. As a judge and coordinator of the Student Art in the Library project, Denise transforms library walls with student art and she documents IPFW theatre productions in the mDON OnStage at IPFW digital collection. As our sometimes archivist, Denise is the "go-to" person when it comes to finding photos for retirement parties and other celebrations of university history.

On her own time, Denise's creative juices just keep flowing. She has written and produced plays performed locally, most recently Fighting Words: Women in Combat Through the Ages in conjunction with the Remnant Trust display at Helmke Library. Most endearing to her colleagues, however, may be her passion for baking and trying out new recipes that we all get to sample.

Answering the INULA newish librarian questions, Denise writes:

Where did you go to library school? Indiana University, Bloomington

What are you reading? If the universe is teeming with aliens-- where is everybody? : fifty solutions to the Fermi paradox and the problem of extraterrestrial life by Stephen Webb

What is at home by your bedside or comfy chair? Notes and research on play topics, a book by Ngaio Marsh, and either a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine.

What music are you listening to? Carmina Burana by Carl Orff or anything classical.

What is the last movie you saw? Was it in a theater or on DVD? Movie? What's a movie?

Hobbies? Obsessions? Interests? I love to cook, bake, feed my co-worker, and collect cookbooks.
