Future Directions

During the 2015-2016 Academic year, InULA would like to explore way to strengthen our organization and create a sustainable plan to help effectively meet our mission to promote excellence in library service and provide opportunities for continuing education and professional growth.  Throughout this year we will have a number of opportunities to discuss future directions for InULA to grow and support IU Libraries. In an effort to get the conversation started, the Board of Directions have three questions we'd like your help exploring. Please share your thoughts by emailing us at inula@indiana.edu or ccwray@indiana.edu.

Question 1: Regular Membership in InULA is currently only open to tenure track librarians.  Should InULA expand regular membership to include other library workers?

Question 2:  How do you envision InULA fulfilling purpose in the future?

Question 3: How do you think we could better support all Indiana University libraries?

Future Directions: Question 1

Currently, membership in InULA is broken into three categories:

Regular
Includes all appointed Indiana University Libraries (IUL) Faculty. Regular Membership benefits include voting, serving as officer and/or as committee chair, committee member, eligibility for Research Incentive Grants. InULA Notes and automatic InULA-L subscription. Discounts for InULA program registration when offered to InULA members.

Associate
Open to all former IUL Faculty, SLIS Faculty, anyone holding an MLS not covered in the regular membership category. Associate member privileges include serving on committees. InULA Notes subscription. Discounts to InULA program registration when offered to InULA members.

Friends
Open to all IUL support staff (non-MLS), SLIS students, anyone not covered in the Associate or Regular membership catagory. Friends privileges include serving on committees, InULA Notes subscription, discounts to InULA program registration when offered to InULA members.

Associate and Friends members are not able to chair committees or apply for research funding. Given our mission as stated in our bylaws:

  1. to promote excellence in library service and
  2. to provide opportunities for continuing education and professional growth.

should InULA expand regular membership to include other library workers.  Here are several senarios:

  1. Regular Membership should include all library workers with MLS degrees
  2. Regular Membership should include all tenure track and professional staff library workers.
  3. Regular Membership should include all interested Library workers, InULA would only have one membership level.

Please share your thoughts by emailing us at inula@indiana.edu or ccwray@indiana.edu.

Future Directions: Question 2

The purpose of InULA, as stated in our bylaws is:

  1. to promote excellence in library service and
  2. to provide opportunities for continuing education and professional growth.

How do you envision InULA fulfilling purpose in the future?  Are there specific skills you would like to improve?  What types of programming would you most like to see?

Please share your thoughts by emailing us at inula@indiana.edu or ccwray@indiana.edu.
