Each year, "la Caixa" undertakes a highly competitive selection process to identify the fifty graduate-level students and professionals who will apply for study at U.S. universities. Indiana University participates in this selection process. Each year, the Dean for International Programs and other I.U. faculty and administrators participate in several days of interviews, after which the final list of candidates is drawn up. The selected Fellows then begin the application process with assistance from I.U.'s Program Coordinator. The program is highly prestigious in Spain and hundreds of young people apply for the scholarships each year. As a measure of its prestige, the King and Queen attend an Award Ceremony each year to personally confer the Fellowship Award on each Fellow. "la Caixa" places no restrictions on the field of study. Some of the areas of study include, but are not limited to: music, mechanical engineering, linguistics, architecture, veterinary medicine, visual arts, law, physics, philosophy, and medical research. The "la Caixa" Fellows tend to be accepted into the top U.S. programs in their fields. For example: Over the years we have placed numerous Fellows at universities such as the University of California-Berkeley, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, and Indiana University. The program has grown significantly in the many years that Indiana University has been involved. In 1985 the class consisted of only 12 students. "la Caixa" increased the number of scholarships to 50 in 1998. Through I.U. "la Caixa" funds all tuition and mandatory fees, travel, health insurance, and a generous living stipend for each Fellow. In addition, "laCaixa" covers I.U.'s overhead including the salary for the Program Coordinator and a part-time secretary.
