Partners for African
Leadership (PAL) was an 8-week internship program for experienced and
practicing professionals from Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, made
possible by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
of the U.S. Department of State. The program had been designed to
facilitate the exchange of information and practices between American
professionals and their African counterparts, and to establish mutually
beneficial and sustainable linkages between institutions.
The professional target areas from which applicants were
selected included women’s entrepreneurship, media / journalism, and
local governance. The U.S.
Embassy Public Affairs Offices in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia reviewed all applications submitted to their posts and selected
participants for the program. Successful applications were then
forwarded to Center for International Education and Development
Assistance (CIEDA), which arranged for their professional placements
in the United States.
Using a network that spans the entire United States, CIEDA sought to tailor each placement to the unique professional goals and interests of the program participants. Since 1995, CIEDA has worked with U.S. Embassies to bring nearly 250 Africans to the United States for short-term professional assignments. While the internship component of the PAL program played a central role in the professional development of all participants, PAL also served to immerse participants in numerous aspects of U.S. culture by providing eight-week homestays with American families, encouraging participation in local American cultural events, and by helping participants find ways to take advantage of other professional development opportunities in their area.
