The development of this trans-Pacific research network and accompanying services will support collaboration between researchers in the US and Asia in a broad range of applications including astronomy, molecular biology, high energy physics, medicine, meteorology, visualization, and computational science. The complementary nature of research being conducted in the US and Asia, the access that will be provided to unique resources, and the benefits of closer ties with the economies of the Asia-Pacific Rim are compelling reasons to construct TransPAC. Based solely on the applications discussed in this proposal without considering future growth of the user community, the $10.1M requested from the NSF for TransPAC will support and leverage approximately $276M in US research investments and $105M in investments made by APAN member countries.
