African Studies Linkage with University of Yaounde, Cameroon

Cameroon Flag

In an effort to develop affiliations with a French-speaking higher education institution in Africa, the African Studies Program at Indiana University (IU) developed a collaborative relationship with the University of Yaounde (UY) in Cameroon. There are two themes in this collaborative affiliation: Higher Education Administration and Curriculum Development.

The first theme, Higher Education Administration, will include the exchange of administrators for institution building at the University of Yaounde and for the initiation of a dialogue between IU and UY administrators on universal problems of higher education administration.

The second theme, Curriculum Development, will include the exchange of faculty members in the humanities and social sciences. There is a strong need to continue to develop new and relevant Africa-related curricula in order to prepare U.S. students for positions of international leadership.

For Indiana University, the objectives of the affiliation are to develop close collaboration with colleagues in a Francophone country; to develop a dialogue about solutions to universal problems of higher education administration; to strengthen the curriculum of Africa-related courses in the humanities and social sciences by including components from Francophone Africa; to increase research opportunities in Francophone Africa; and to improve the Cameroon collections in the IU library and art museum for both research and outreach purposes.

For the University of Yaounde, one of the main objectives of the affiliation is to improve the capacity to administer a diverse faculty within an institution which has recently been reorganized and which is seeking to incorporate some of the administrative procedures which have been successful in U.S. institutions. The other main objective is to develop new curricular offerings in the humanities and social sciences. Other objectives are to increase access to U.S. colleagues, library collections and archives for research purposes, improve the UY library collection, and begin to develop laboratories for the study of subjects such as archaeology and fine arts.
