WHAT WE DO
1. ISIS K-12
Classroom Programming
We want to encourage you to take advantage of the diverse range of international
studies programming opportunities that ISIS offers K-12 educators. ISIS
programs are available, free-of-charge, to K-12 teachers, in Indiana
or any states, whose schools have access to IAV technology. We even
pay for the connection charges.
ISIS presenters include Indiana University international students, both
graduate and undergraduate, visiting scholars, academic specialists,
and world area study centers' outreach staff. Each is selected for his
or her special expertise regarding a requested program topic.
ISIS topics can address a wide range of curricular subjects, including
current events. Topics can be as general as "The Daily Culture of India"
and as specific as "The Effects of the Rainforest Biome on the Local
Culture."
Tailored programs originate with the teacher, who contacts us to request
the development of an interactive video (IAV) program focusing on a
particular curriculum topic. The relevant IU world area studies center
identifies a presenter(s) and the ISIS Programs Coordinator trains her
or him in the best use of the IAV equipment and assists in the design
of the program. The final product is negotiated among the teacher, the
presenter, and the ISIS Coordinator. Each "event" is scheduled for a
broadcast time which fits both the teacher's and the presenter's schedules.
State standards and proficiencies are addressed in each individual ISIS
program.
2. Orientations
to Interactive Video (IAV) Programming
In addition to the development and delivery of international studies
classroom programs, we also will provide 15-60 minute orientation programs
for student classes or teacher groups. Free-of-charge, these programs
are meant to introduce the audience to the technology, to provide an
initial, safe interactive experience, and/or to introduce the basic
principles of IAV curriculum planning.

HISTORY & SPONSORS
The International
Studies In Schools (ISIS) program originated in 1995 as a joint
endeavor of Indiana University's Office of International Programs(OIP)
and the Center for Research on Learning and Technology(CRLT), with the
support of a two-year Content Providers' start-up grant from the Corporation
for Educational Communications (CEC). The continuation and expansion
of ISIS through 1997-1999 was made possible with the combined support
of an International Awareness Grant from the Indiana Humanities Council
and IU's Office of International Programs, world area studies centers
(see Resources), and the CRLT. IU continues to support ISIS with funding,
presenters, and staff.

CONNECTIONS TO
OTHER COUNTRIES
We do not arrange
these connections, but direct you and your interactive video (IAV) technology
staff, to an International IAV Site Directory, called Global
Interactive Academic Network (GIANT). This is a website of the Center
for the Study of Global Change at Indiana University, one of the centers
which supports ISIS. The site directory is updated regularly and has
links to other site directories. Some sites may charge a fee for studio
rental and technician time. Check first and request a free technical
test.
As you are designing a country-to-country connection with a teacher
in the other country, we strongly suggest that you plan (and budget)
for a first connection between the teachers only. This way, you can
co-experience the quality of the connections and the equipment. You
can also plan the class-to-class connection, or a series of connections,
so as to maximize their value.
If you use this International IAV site directory and have the time,
we'd appreciate hearing from you - where you connected, the quality
of the IAV connection, and what you did with it. - Nick Clark
