Labor History in the Late Ottoman and Modern Middle East Era

There is a new website devoted to labor history during the late Ottoman and modern Middle East era. It contains originals and translations of books, articles and contemporary original documents. These materials connect to many issues regarding social and economic and gender studies. These materials may be used at will. The site managers—John Chalcraft of the LSE and Don Quataert, SUNY Binghamton—ask only that you formally acknowledge such use. Moreover, we welcome additions of any materials you may have. Internet-based Resource for the Study of Early Islamic History: PEIA

The Prosopography of Early Islamic Administration (PEIA) is part of the Jerusalem Prosopography Project (JPP). JPP also includes several other prosopographies of mine that use the same platform.

For the time being access to PEIA is limited to a maximum of five records per historical personality.

Most colleagues will probably use it for identifying a governor or a shurṭa chief. Obviously, rare names such as Ḥunāṭa (type hunata) or al-ʿAwwām (type awwam, “al-“ is not taken into account) are easier to handle than common ones.

Records can also be retrieved through keywords that cover a large range of topics. In PEIA, keywords related to administration are more likely to be accompanined by records.

One can also run a general google-style search of the whole databse. Here are some random examples. If you search shurṭa egypt (type shurta egypt without diacritical points or capital letters) you receive 368 results. The first 25 include both shurta and egypt, while the other 313 include either shurta or egypt. If you search kharāj ṣalāt (type kharaj salat) you receive 229 results, but again only the first 25 results include both kharāj and ṣalāt, while the other results only include one of the two search words. A general search for maʿūna (type mauna) yields 12 results and so on.

The tool offered here is not perfect, far from it. But it was felt that this Internet-based resource could be of help to researchers even at its present state.
